Case No.: 001
Case Name: The Cadiz Cathedral Sighting (September 5, 1979 at 11:30 pm)
In the city of Cadiz (Spain) on the evening of September 5, 1979, numerous people were witnesses to a sighting, highlighting a considerable number of fishermen who were working at the time of the event, and who saw the object in the vicinity of the San Sebastián Castle and Lighthouse.
This sighting was investigated by the GEIFO group, interviewing numerous witnesses in various parts of the city, whose testimony on the details of the case coincided, with barely any discrepancies in their accounts. The telephones at the Diario de Cadiz newspaper rang off the hook, with people inquiring as to the nature of the object.
The photographer Movellán was sent by the newspaper to the Cathedral area to photograph the object in question. It was disc-shaped and measured some 40 meters in diameter, approximately. The UFO, according to witnesses, had a number of colors and looked "like a merry-go-round at the fair." It also rotated on its own axis, and its lower section appeared to be concave.
Diario de Cadiz published a news story on the event, from which we can abstract the following:
"The time was around eleven at night. Some two nautical miles distant from San Sebastián Castle, a sort of ball with the apparent size of an orange became visible. It executed strange maneuvers in the air...it grew in size until it resembled a football, with the luminosity of a powerful searchlight, with a bluish-white light. It headed toward the Cathedral, remaining motionless above it for a sufficiently long span of time that allowed Movellán to photograph it...."
Minutes later, the UFO headed at high speed in an west-to-east direction, toward the Port of Santa María. There were blackouts reported in several sectors of the old city, creating uncertainty and concern among residents of Cadiz.
Points to take into account:
- Numerous witnesses
- The phones at Diario de Cadiz rang insistently, reporting the sighting.
- Diario de Cadiz sent out Movellán, who successfully photographed the object.
Evaluation:
Multi-colored flying object of unknown origin.
