Argentina: Former President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was Instrumental in Creating CEFAE

Argentina has its own national UFO research agency, the Comisión para el Estudio de Fenómenos Espaciales (CEFAE - Commission for the Study of Aerospatial Phenomena), created in 2011 during the presidency of Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.

Its creation was brought about by the "growing number of sightings in the country", but it wasn't until 2015 that CEFAE published its first report, recording 10 sightings of Unidentified Flying Objects between the months of November and December of that year.

"Inquiries reach their peak in the summer, during the vacation months," says Rubén Lianza, who has directed the Commission since late 2014, in an interview with the La Nación newspaper. "It’s when people have time to look up at the sky," he adds.

Lianza is a former pilot with the Argentinean Air Force and former commander of the Marambio Air Base. He is a fan of astronomy and a student of the UFO phenomenon for over 40 years. Accompanied by his secretary, they work in a refurbished section of the Condor Building, property of the Air Force, in the city of Buenos Aires. That is where they receive inquiries: "They come to us mainly from the cities of the Atlantic coast or from Cordoba," he adds.

The agency ranks as a "commission" within the Air Force, and for this reason it lacks its own budget line. Its resources are reallocated from other areas.

The report, the only one for the moment, was presented in late 2015 and consists of 10 cases, of which four involved people who mistook stars for flying saucers, while in others they photographed blurry helicopters or airplanes and even a bird flying in the distance.
