On the evening of September 5, 1979, the telephones at the *Diario de Cádiz* newsroom rang incessantly, as citizens called in claiming to be witnessing something truly astonishing: a UFO.
According to their accounts, this UFO was hovering at a very low altitude—over the sea in the *Campo del Sur* district, near the Cathedral—and remained completely motionless.
Based on the statements of these excited witnesses, it can be inferred that the UFO resembled a multicolored fairground carousel or "merry-go-round," spinning on its own axis without emitting a single sound. It remained in this position for a considerable time—nearly an hour—long enough, in fact, for the *Diario de Cádiz* to dispatch its staff photographer, "Movellán," who managed to capture the mysterious visitor on film.
Subsequently, the object moved away and vanished from the sight of the numerous observers.
GEIFO investigated the incident the very next day (despite the fact that most of us lived in Cádiz, we remained completely unaware of the event until we saw it reported in the *Diario*). Many witnesses confirmed that night's sighting to us—including several police officers—though they did so privately, out of personal friendship with me, rather than in an official capacity.
Nor did the local military authorities we consulted have any knowledge of the event—a lack of information that was, in that era, to be expected.
A few days later, a phone call from a friend informed me that he knew a woman who claimed to have had a personal experience directly related to the Cádiz sighting. He provided me with a name, a phone number, and an address. When I dialed the number he had given me, I reached Mari Carmen Casado (a pseudonym), who agreed to meet me for an interview at her home. She claimed to have been abducted by the "Cathedral UFO."
When we arrived at Mari Carmen’s house, her husband answered the door and invited us inside. He introduced us to his wife but appeared reluctant to let us proceed with the interview, as they feared the situation might spiral out of control, leading to public ridicule or harassment. They were a young married couple—he the more assertive of the two, while she appeared quite timid. We put them at ease, assuring them that we were not journalists and that we would not disclose any details that could lead to their identification. Once they were convinced that they would face no repercussions, we sat down, and over coffee, Mari Carmen began her story.
On the night of the incident—around the time of the sighting (midnight)—she was already in bed and asleep. A very distinctive sound woke her: the sound of an open faucet. Alerted, she got up and checked the kitchen, the bathroom, and the sink. All the faucets were tightly closed and functioning normally. It was then that she realized the sound wasn't coming from any specific location, but rather seemed to permeate the very air around her. Meanwhile, her husband, oblivious to it all, continued to sleep peacefully.
But she sensed that something was amiss. The sound seemed to affect her in a strange way—as if diminishing and controlling her willpower, and compelling her to leave the apartment. She felt an overwhelming need to go outside, though she had no clear idea why or where she was headed. Eventually, the woman lost all capacity to resist; opening the door, she stepped out onto the stair landing and began to descend the staircase, bypassing the elevator entirely. Her apartment was located on the third floor.
When she had reached the space between the third and second floors, she sensed the presence of someone—even though the stairwell was shrouded in dimness from the streetlights outside, as she had not turned on the stairwell light. At first, she mistook the figure for a short, bald elderly man. It stood motionless—neither ascending nor descending—as if waiting for her. As she drew nearly level with it, Mari Carmen realized that this was no elderly gentleman, but rather a small-statured being with a notably large head and large eyes that watched her intently as she passed by. It was a creature utterly unlike any human being of this world. It wore tight-fitting, light-colored clothing. However, the witness felt no fear—only a strange sensation she could not describe: a blend of unease and bewilderment. Moments later, the witness found herself out on the street. She felt a gentle breeze against her face. Two beings—similar to the one she had encountered on the staircase—were waiting for her. There was something else there, too: something resembling a “bathtub”—like those found in a bathroom—except that it was not a bathtub in the conventional sense, but rather a vehicle intended for transport, and of a considerably larger size than a standard tub. The comparison occurred to her due to its shape—resembling a rectangular box—and its color: a radiant white.
Once she and the two beings were settled inside the contraption (the one from the staircase was not present), it rose into the air, ascending above the rooftops of the tallest buildings.
In her own words: “I could see the entire city, illuminated, spread out beneath us.”
In very short order, they found themselves in the vicinity of the Cathedral; the “bathtub” positioned itself beneath a circular structure, drawn inexorably toward it. Mari Carmen’s recollection of the events that followed remains somewhat hazy. In a vague and imprecise manner—like fleeting “flashes” surfacing in her mind—she recounts that she found herself inside the UFO, where a corridor could be seen encircling the craft. Within it, there appeared to be niches of some kind—compartments where she surmised the crew members must have rested or slept. When asked why she assumed this, she replied that she could not explain how she knew.
She also recalls a large central chamber containing a table resembling a gurney or operating table, upon which she was laid face-up after being undressed.
All the rooms she observed were illuminated by a white, rather intense light. Once she was on the operating table, the beings who had brought her there leaned over her. The witness could not clearly recall what specific tests were performed on her, but she asserts that they were akin to medical examinations or observations. In any case, she states that although she attempted to resist, she found it utterly impossible to do so. She was completely under their control—as if hypnotized.
At no point did she hear any conversation or sound of any kind; the entire episode unfolded in complete silence. Nor does she recall how or when she left the UFO and returned home.
The following morning, the *Diario de Cádiz* reported the news of the sighting; it was only then that all the memories of that night flooded back into her mind. Had it not, then, been merely a dream?
Thus concludes the witness's account. We administered a questionnaire and determined that Mari Carmen possessed extensive knowledge of the UFO phenomenon—knowledge viewed, moreover, through a distinctly "ufolatrous" lens. We asked her if she was familiar with "Misión Rama," automatic writing, and other related topics; she confirmed that she was—going so far as to provide us with a demonstration of such writing. She confided that, through this very method, she had been able to foresee the arrival of the craft well in advance. All these factors caused her credibility to steadily erode, increasingly undermining her standing as a reliable witness.
Nevertheless, we opted to leave the case temporarily open, pending the emergence of any new information that might shed a different light on the incident. In any event, the case appeared to be clear-cut.
